Free camping by the Murchison River
at Galena Bridge, WA

Galena Bridge is a well-loved free camp spot tucked beside the Murchison River, about 13 km north of the Kalbarri turnoff on Western Australia’s North West Coastal Highway.

It’s a popular overnight rest area for grey nomads, road trippers, and budget-conscious travellers heading to or from Kalbarri National Park.

There are two distinct camping zones here: the southern side, which is more developed and spacious, and the northern side, which offers a quieter, more basic bush camp feel. The southern area comes with eco-toilets, picnic tables, fire pits (BYO firewood), and rubbish bins. Campfires are allowed outside of the fire ban season (15 October – 1 March), and firewood collection on site is not permitted. Dump points are also available for travellers needing to offload responsibly.

The northern area, across the old Galena Bridge, is simpler—no toilets, fewer campers, and arguably more peaceful. Both sides are suitable for big rigs, caravans, and campervans, but during or after rain the tracks can get muddy and boggy.

Nature lovers will appreciate the stunning river views, wide open skies, and the variety of birdlife—over 100 species have been spotted here. It’s a top spot to kick back with a cuppa and watch the sun go down or take a walk along the riverbank.

This is a 24-hour rest area managed by Main Roads WA. The stay limit is enforced, and while pets are welcome, they must be kept under control. Like all good free camps, it’s self-sufficient living—so leave it tidy, take your rubbish, and respect other campers.

Galena Bridge is more than just a roadside stop—it’s a snapshot of outback river camping done right. Scenic, free, and practical, it’s one of those little WA gems that make the long drives worthwhile.
