Market Street, Pushkar
The heart of Rajasthan’s greatest fair
During the annual Camel Fair, the heart of Pushkar hits peak buzz as Market Street morphs into an explosion of colour, culture, and commerce.
What’s normally a busy marketplace cranks up to a whole new level, with the ancient pathways packed with merchants, artisans, and their incredible wares. From dawn till dusk, the streets pulse with an energy that’s unlike anything else in India.
New life during the Camel Fair
Market Street’s role during the Camel Fair connects to centuries of trading heritage. The bazaar area, traditionally a commercial hub near sacred Pushkar Lake, expands dramatically during the fair. Local artisans and traders from across Rajasthan converge here, continuing a tradition that dates back to medieval times. The narrow lanes of Market Street spill chaotically beyond their usual boundaries, creating a maze of temporary and permanent stalls.
Street vendors display an expanded range of goods, from traditional textiles to camel decorations and ceremonial items.
During this special period, the shopping in Pushkar includes unique items specifically related to the fair. Camel bells, decorative saddles, and ornate bridles become hot commodities. Traditional Rajasthani crafts take on new significance as artists create pieces celebrating the regional heritage. Local artisans prepare all year for this peak trading season, creating distinctive collections of jewellery, leather goods, and decorative items.
The cultural heritage of Pushkar shines through specially designed products that commemorate the fair, from embroidered camel motifs to brass figurines depicting desert life. Merchants from neighbouring states bring their unique crafts, transforming Market Street into a comprehensive display of North Indian artistry. The sacred city’s marketplace becomes a cultural crossroads where different artistic traditions meet and blend.
Festival atmosphere
The traditional Indian market awakens earlier than usual during the fair. Merchants begin setting up before sunrise, preparing for the day’s intense trading with the morning air filling with an orchestra of sounds – temple bells, merchant calls, and the distant lowing of camels.
Later, as sunset approaches, Market Street takes on a carnival-like atmosphere. The Pushkar bazaar glows with additional lighting while cultural performances spring up spontaneously. Street food vendors work at full capacity, serving regional specialties to the countless visitors
Be aware though, if you are not vigilant, your tasty snack may contain something a little extra that can turn your stomach upside down. Street food hygiene is not fantastic here at any time so having anti-nausea tablets on hand is (in my opinion) essential. Believe me, on one occasion my wrap had my stomach churning a few hours later. All because unclean hands were use to cook it.
The fair brings also unique trading customs to Market Street.
Merchants often engage in traditional bargaining rituals, sealing deals with a shared cup of chai. One particular trader wouldn’t let me go without a cup of sweat milk chai, which I loved. The shopping in Pushkar during this time follows age-old practices which will have you adapting your modern expectations.
Safety considerations
Market Street is understandably extremely crowded atmosphere during the fair which will need you to have extra vigilance.
The dense crowds provide opportunities for pickpockets and thieves who specifically target mobile phones and wallets. Mobile phone theft creates particular challenges, as replacing a phone in India involves extensive paperwork, police reports, and lengthy bureaucratic processes. I
lost my phone this way in Market Street and it took me hours to get a new one.
Best practice is to wear a bag across the front of your body, keeping valuables zipped in front pockets, and avoiding displaying expensive electronics openly while shopping.
Summary
During the Camel Fair, Market Street in Pushkar reaches its zenith as a trading hub. This traditional Indian market exemplifies the vibrant spirit of Rajasthan’s commercial heritage while showcasing the dynamic nature of its cultural traditions. The fair period transforms this already remarkable marketplace into an unforgettable display of commerce, craft, and celebration.
It is a crazy, wonderful mix of noise, lights, people and food. I went back every night I was in Pushkar and always found something new.
