Welcome to Western Australia
Western Australia, the country’s largest state, spans nearly a third of the continent and offers some of the most remote, dramatic, and awe-inspiring landscapes found anywhere in the world.
Aboriginal peoples, including the Noongar in the south and the Martu and Kimberley groups in the north, have lived across this land since time immemorial. Their connection to Country is reflected in ancient rock art, sacred sites, and living cultural traditions that remain deeply embedded in the state’s identity.
European contact began in the early 1600s with Dutch navigators charting the west coast. British colonisation followed in the 1820s, with settlement centred around the Swan River colony, now Perth. Over time, the discovery of gold, fertile land, and mineral wealth reshaped the economy and population.
Western Australia is defined by its scale and contrasts: turquoise coastal waters at Ningaloo Reef, the raw outback beauty of the Pilbara, towering forests in the south-west, and the ancient ridges of the Kimberley. Perth, vibrant and modern, offers culture, beaches, and sunshine in equal measure.
Tourism here is about wide open spaces, unforgettable road trips, and encounters with nature at its most unspoiled. Western Australia rewards those willing to go the extra distance.
