I took the Huon Pine Walk on a still morning, the kind where the forest almost holds its breath.

It’s one of the best short walks in Tasmania—not just because it’s easy, but because it feels like stepping into a living museum, with the Tarkine wilderness as your guide.

The walk itself: What makes the Huon Pine Walk so special

This loop is short—just 600 metres—and completely flat, but it’s thick with atmosphere. Raised boardwalks and gravel paths wind through lush rainforest right beside the Pieman River. It’s the perfect introduction to the ancient Huon pine, one of the slowest-growing and longest-living trees on earth. These pines, some over 2,000 years old, line the track like wise elders. Interpretive signs add depth without being overbearing, so it’s educational without feeling like school.

The smell of damp bark and moss was earthy and calming. There was no rush—just the sound of water, the occasional birdcall, and my boots quietly crunching gravel. No need for hiking gear or great fitness. This is a stroll for everyone.

Getting there: Finding Corinna and stepping into the wild

Corinna sits in remote north-west Tasmania, and getting there is part of the charm. It’s not somewhere you just pass by—you have to want to get there. The start of the Huon Pine Walk is at 1 Corinna Rd, Corinna, Tasmania, 7321, right near the Corinna Wilderness Village. If you’re coming from the south, you’ll cross the Pieman River by barge—an experience in itself. From the north, the gravel road weaves through primeval forest.

This entire region, the edge of the Tarkine wilderness, feels untouched. Corinna is a tiny settlement, but its isolation is its strength. It makes the Huon Pine Walk feel like something you’ve earned, even if it only takes 15 minutes.

In Summary

If you’re after a quick walk that captures the spirit of Tasmania’s wild west without breaking a sweat, this is it. The Huon Pine Walk in Corinna isn’t about ticking off distance—it’s about slowing down and seeing a different kind of grandeur. I reckon it’s a must-do if you’re anywhere near the Tarkine. Easy, beautiful, and quietly unforgettable.

    <a data-rel="iLightbox[postimages]" data-title="Our Dusty Backroads –
