You’ll never guess where the locals eat in Wentworth

You know you’re in proper country territory when the bloke at the servo doesn’t give you five options or name-drop the latest hipster café — he just points across the road and says, “Go see the girls at the paper shop.”

And fair enough too, because what we found in Wentworth, NSW was an absolute belter of a breakfast spot.

Jeannie and I were doing the usual “where do we eat?” routine that every road trip eventually boils down to. We’d pulled into town half-hungry, half-curious, and the friendly lad pumping fuel gave us a lead.

Not TripAdvisor.

Not Instagram.

A bloke at the bowser. And he wasn’t wrong.

Just a street over, hidden in plain sight, was a classic newsagent with a café tucked in the back. No neon signs, no avocado foam, just the smell of coffee, eggs frying, and the cheerful buzz of locals doing their morning laps. Some grabbed the paper, others yarned with the two women running the show. One old fella even wandered in wearing a Socceroos scarf — possibly more out of habit than current form.

Jeannie went for the bacon and eggs, and I locked in a toasted cheese and tomato ‘toasty’.

Mate, I’ve eaten versions of this sandwich in city cafés that cost triple the price and delivered half the flavour. This one? Toasted golden, tomato fresh, cheese melty — just like Mum used to make after Saturday morning footy when we came home covered in grass stains and mud.

This little gem isn’t trying to be trendy — and that’s exactly why it works. It’s old-school, hearty, and full of soul. The kind of café where you’d half expect someone to greet you by name when you open the front door.

So if you’re asking where to eat in Wentworth, skip the apps and follow your nose — or better yet, follow the servo tip.

My verdict

This is the kind of breakfast joint that deserves its own fan club. Good tucker, salt-of-the-earth service, and a side of local banter. Pure small-town gold.

You will find it at 55 Darling St, Wentworth NSW just over the bridge n the centre of town.
