Embarking on a cycling journey through the vast Australian landscape is an adventure like no other. As the wheels of my bicycle turn, I’m transported into a world where time slows down, and every pedal stroke brings new discoveries.
The early bird catches the worm… and the best cycling conditions
Today’s adventure began at the crack of dawn – 5 am to be precise. With the world still shrouded in darkness, I set out on what would become my earliest start yet. The absence of traffic created an almost surreal atmosphere, allowing me to ride mostly without lights. This decision wasn’t just about conserving battery power; it was about honing my night vision and truly immersing myself in the pre-dawn world. Only when the occasional car appeared on the horizon did I flick on my lights, a brief interruption to the peaceful solitude.
Fuelling up for the long haul
As any seasoned cyclist knows, proper nutrition is key to maintaining energy levels on long rides. My journey took me through Lake Boga, where I treated myself to a hearty steak sandwich at the local roadhouse. This satisfying meal provided the fuel I needed to tackle the flat, expansive countryside that lay ahead. By late afternoon, I had reached my goal for the day: Swan Hill and the Big 4 Caravan Park.
Finding comfort in unexpected places
Of all the stops on my trip so far, this caravan park has emerged as my favorite. Clean amenities and a prime spot by the river made the $44 site fee feel like a bargain. Despite my small tent looking somewhat out of place among the larger caravans, I couldn’t resist the allure of river frontage and access to power for charging my electronics. It’s these small comforts that can make all the difference on a long-distance cycling trip.
Overcoming challenges and making promises
While the day’s ride was relatively straightforward, it wasn’t without its challenges. The flat, sometimes monotonous roads tested my mental endurance as much as my physical stamina. I found myself longing to venture off the main highway, to explore the less-traveled paths. However, the memory of broken rack bolts from earlier in the trip kept me cautious. A promise made to a lonesome kookaburra (a story for another time) served as a reminder to play it safe and stick to my planned route.
Embracing the journey, one pedal stroke at a time
As I reflect on the day’s journey, I’m reminded of the true essence of slow travel. It’s not just about covering distances, but about immersing oneself in the surroundings, embracing the unexpected, and finding joy in the simple moments. Whether it’s the thrill of cycling in pre-dawn darkness, the satisfaction of a well-earned meal, or the comfort of a riverside campsite, each experience adds a rich layer to the tapestry of the journey.
For those considering their own cycling adventure, remember that it’s not always about the destination. Sometimes, the most memorable moments come from the challenges we face and overcome along the way.
So grab your bike, pack your sense of adventure, and see where the open road takes you. Who knows? You might just find yourself sharing a quiet moment with a kookaburra, making promises that shape the course of your journey.
Always know a South Australian when they pass up a steak for a Shnity! Good work, particularly working away on doing the ‘ton’ (133k)
Cheers
Chris
You can probably all understand the flack I cop for having a Schnitty then. So many healthy choices and I ignore them all.
