Free lakeside camping at Kyffins Reserve, Lake Mulwala

If you’re after a free bush camp with lake views, Kyffins Reserve on the NSW side of Lake Mulwala hits the mark. It’s peaceful, spacious, and rewards self-sufficient travellers.

Kyffins Reserve stretches along the foreshore of Lake Mulwala just a few kilometres out of Mulwala township. It’s not a formal campground in the strict sense — more a designated area where you can pull up in a camper, caravan, or tent and make your own site. The entire strip is free camping and offers unpowered sites only. It’s first-come, first-served, and while it can get busy on weekends and holidays, there’s usually room somewhere. Shade is decent in parts, especially under the river red gums lining the lake.

Facilities and amenities

This is free camping — not a caravan park — so come prepared. There are no facilities at all: no toilets, no showers, no drinking water, no bins, and no dump points. You’ll need to bring everything with you and take it all away. It’s pet friendly and ideal for self-contained vehicles. Those tent camping need to be 100% prepared. At time of writing, campfires are not permitted on-site due to fire risk and lack of infrastructure — always check local regulations before lighting up.

Access and road conditions

2WD accessible along the main track. The surface is unsealed but well-graded, suitable for most vehicles in dry weather. Wet periods can make the edges boggy, so park with care. Some larger rigs may need to scout ahead before committing — turning space is available but limited in tight spots.

Nearby attractions and activities

The big draw here is Lake Mulwala itself. Fishing’s popular — you’ll find plenty chasing Murray cod and golden perch. There’s a walking and bike path connecting the reserve to Mulwala, making it easy to duck into town for supplies or a pub meal. Waterbirds are prolific, and sunrise over the lake can be stunning if you’re up early enough. You’re also near the Yarrawonga–Mulwala twin towns, with shops, bakeries and a golf course close by.

Who this site is best suited for

Perfect for budget-conscious travellers in self-contained vehicles, grey nomads doing the Murray run, and anyone who values a peaceful lakeside camp. Great for RV camping and camper trailers. Families with young kids will enjoy the open space, but parents should keep a close eye on the water’s edge. Probably not the best fit for those who can’t live without power, toilets, or solid mobile reception.

The verdict

Kyffins Reserve punches well above its weight for a free camp. The lakeside position is magic, especially for sunrise or a calm afternoon with the rods out. But you’ll need to be completely self-reliant — there’s absolutely nothing provided. Still, for a laid-back bush camp where the only sound is birdsong and the odd boat motor, it’s hard to knock it.
