A Baan Hill Picnic Area camping escape

So you’re thinking about a bit of camping and bush walking around Baan Hill south of Lameroo in South Australia are you?

If you are, then great, I really enjoyed my visit here!

Baan Hill‘s a great spot for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life for a night or two. It’s smack-bang in the middle of the Mallee country, about 240 km east of Adelaide and only 25 from Lameroo which makes it easy to go get supplies if needed. Be aware though, it’s not exactly a tourist hotspot and the facilities are very rudimentary, but that’s part of its charm, isn’t it?

The area around Baan Hill is pretty flat, but don’t let that fool you, there’s still plenty to see and do. You’ll find yourself surrounded by native scrub, mallee trees, and if you’re lucky, you might spot some of the local wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos, emus, and all sorts of birds.

Now, about the camping – it’s pretty basic out there. You’ll need to bring everything you need, including water. There aren’t any fancy facilities, so be prepared to rough it a bit are better still, bring a van or camper. There is plenty of room and you probably won’t see anyone else.

When it comes to bush walking, you’ve got a few options. The terrain’s not too challenging, so it’s great for a leisurely stroll or a more serious hike if that’s your thing. Just remember to bring a good map, plenty of water, and let someone know where you’re headed.

For something longer or more challenging, Ngarkat Conservation Park is only a short drive away, and that’s a real beauty and definitely worth a visit if you’ve got the time.

It’s a much bigger park, covering about 270,000 hectares and it’s got wonderful ripper 4WD tracks, more challenging walks, and even some sand dunes if you’re up for it.

Just a heads up, though – the weather out here can be a bit unpredictable. It can get bloody hot during the day and pretty chilly at night, so pack accordingly.

All in all, if you’re after a true Aussie bush experience, Baan Hill and the surrounding area won’t disappoint.

Just remember to respect the land, take your rubbish with you, and be prepared for a bit of solitude. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and enjoy the great outdoors.
