The Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path offers a scenic 17km round trip through the rugged bushland of central Australia. Beginning opposite Flynn’s Grave, located 7km from Alice Springs along Larapinta Drive, this trail provides cyclists with a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the Northern Territory’s arid landscape.

For those seeking a longer ride, parking at the visitor centre and take the concrete path to Flynn’s Memorial adding an extra 5km to the journey. Caution is advised when crossing Larapinta Drive at the trailhead, as cars can approach quickly over the rise.

The path itself follows a winding route through sparse arid scrub and over low rolling hills. Its meandering nature has been humorously described as being laid out by an “intoxicated ant.” Along the way, numerous informative panels offer fascinating insights into the local geology, flora, and Aboriginal history of the area. These unexpected educational stops provide a rich context to the ride and are well worth taking the time to read.

Approximately 3km from the start, riders will encounter a small water tank. However, it’s essential not to rely on this as a water source. Cyclists should carry 3-4 liters of water per person for the return journey, as there are no other water sources along the trail or at Simpsons Gap.

The ride offers opportunities to spot unique wildlife, particularly during warmer months. Lucky cyclists might glimpse a Perentie, Australia’s largest lizard, growing up to 2m in length. Euros, similar to the majestic Red Kangaroo, are also common in the area.

It’s worth noting that mobile phone coverage is intermittent for the first and last 5km of the journey, with no reception in between. This adds to the sense of adventure and isolation that makes the Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path a truly memorable outback cycling experience.
