A vibrant Sunday afternoon at Gibson wines
Our first Sunday Funday at Gibson Wines turned out to be an absolute ripper. The Barossa Valley showed off its finest spring weather as we arrived at the historic Light Pass property. The lawn area bustled with life, shaded by grand old trees and festive tents. Within moments of arriving, we knew we’d stumbled upon something special.
The Valley Cats had the crowd grooving with their stellar performance while glasses clinked and laughter filled the air. We found ourselves sharing a table with some wonderful locals who made us feel right at home in true Barossa style. Their stories about previous Sunday Fundays at Gibson Wines had us wishing we’d discovered this gem sooner.
The Gibson Wines experience
It seems that the Gibson Wines Sunday Funday tradition has become a cherished part of the Barossa Valley social calendar. We have just been slow to discover them. These gatherings from October through April bring together wine lovers, music enthusiasts, and foodies for an afternoon of pure enjoyment. Each event features different musicians and food options, creating unique experiences throughout the season.
We loved the vibe which everyone was finding infectious – groups sprawled across picnic rugs, others gathered at tables, all enjoying the premium wines that Gibson Wines is renowned for.
A family legacy in wine
The Gibson Wines story speaks of dedication and passion. Since 1996, this family-owned winery has been crafting exceptional wines that showcase the best of the Barossa Valley. Rob Gibson’s background as a viticulturist, geologist, and winemaker brings a unique perspective to their winemaking approach. His deep understanding of soil composition and vineyard management shines through in every bottle.
Today, alongside Rob, Anne and Adam Gibson continue to explore and innovate while maintaining their commitment to authentic Barossa wines.
Their Light Pass location, surrounding an 1850s Blacksmith’s cottage, provides the perfect setting for their thoughtfully crafted wines. At approximately 280 metres above sea level, this slightly elevated position contributes to the distinctive character of their estate-grown varieties.
The family’s connection to the land runs deep, extending beyond their own vineyards through partnerships with multi-generational Barossa grape growing families. These relationships ensure access to some of the region’s most exceptional fruit, while supporting the local wine growing community.
Conclusion
Our afternoon at Gibson Wines reminded me why the Barossa Valley holds such a special place in Australian wine culture.
The combination of exceptional wines, warm hospitality, and vibrant atmosphere makes these Sunday Fundays an essential Barossa experience.
As we reluctantly packed up to leave, we were already planning our return for the next Sunday Funday at Gibson Wines. After all, there’s nothing quite like spending a Sunday afternoon in the company of good wines and even better people
