Iron Knob

Iron Knob, located in South Australia, played a crucial role in the state’s mining history. Discovered in the late 19th century, it became one of Australia’s most significant iron ore deposits. Mining operations began in 1899, supplying ore to the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP). The town of Iron Knob grew around the mine, peaking in the mid-20th century. The high-grade hematite ore extracted from Iron Knob was essential for Australia’s steel industry, particularly the steelworks in Whyalla.
