The Finke River Rest Area, situated approximately 125 kilometres from Alice Springs, serves as a popular stopover for travellers exploring the heart of Australia. In March 2018, this picturesque spot provided a welcome respite for weary travellersfrom hours at the wheel.

Like many similar rest areas in the Outback, securing an overnight spot at Finke River requires early arrival. It was only mid-afternoon but the area was bustling with activity, hosting around ten caravans and motorhomes. The main parking area featured a sealed circular road, offering convenience for larger vehicles.

However, for those seeking a more rustic experience, easy access to the dirt area adjacent to the river bank is available. For additional space and privacy, a dirt road leading north from the main site would accommodate several vans and also caters for those seeking a more secluded camping experience and willing to venture slightly off the beaten path.

The rest area boasts basic but functional amenities. An undercover table with benches provides a sheltered spot for meals or socialising. Sufficient bins are scattered throughout, contributing to the overall tidiness of the area. It’s evident that regular maintenance keeps the site in good condition for visitors.

One of the area’s main drawcards is its tranquillity, particularly after nightfall. With light traffic on the nearby highway, peaceful sleep comes easily to weary travellers. The site’s ambiance is enhanced by the subtle evidence of small campfires, a common and welcomed practice in this region.

The Finke River Rest Area encapsulates the essence of Outback camping – a blend of convenience and rugged beauty that offers travellers a taste of the Australian wilderness.
