Coastal Wonders
A Three-Day Journey Along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road
In the 50ish years I have been driving, I have taken this route more than twenty times, generally heading east from South Australia but occasionally the opposite direction as well.
The Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, is a 250(ish) kilometre stretch of stunning coastal scenery, winding through charming seaside towns and showcasing some of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the country. This three-day road trip takes you from the surf capital of Torquay to the picturesque town of Peterborough, offering a perfect blend of beach culture, lush rainforests, and iconic limestone formations.
Route: Torquay – Bells Beach – Anglesea – Aireys Inlet – Lorne – Apollo Bay – Lavers Hill – Port Campbell – Port Campbell National Park – Allansford – Peterborough
Day 1: Torquay to Lorne
- Torquay
Your journey begins in Torquay, the official starting point of the Great Ocean Road and the gateway to Victoria’s surf coast. Known as the surfing capital of Australia, Torquay is home to iconic surf brands like Rip Curl and Quiksilver. Before hitting the road, visit the Australian National Surfing Museum to learn about the sport’s rich history and culture. - Bells Beach
Just a short drive from Torquay, Bells Beach is a must-visit destination for surf enthusiasts. This world-renowned surf break hosts the annual Rip Curl Pro surfing competition. Even if you’re not a surfer, the rugged cliffs and powerful waves make for a spectacular sight. - Anglesea
As you continue along the coast, you’ll reach Anglesea, a charming seaside town known for its beautiful beach and abundant wildlife. Take a detour to the Anglesea Golf Club, where you might spot kangaroos grazing on the fairways. The Anglesea Heath, part of the Great Otway National Park, offers excellent bushwalking opportunities. - Aireys Inlet
Next stop is Aireys Inlet, home to the iconic Split Point Lighthouse. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the coastline or take a guided tour to learn about the lighthouse’s history. The surrounding cliff-top walks provide stunning vistas and opportunities to spot native birds and plants. - Lorne
End your first day in Lorne, a bustling coastal town with a vibrant arts scene and excellent dining options. Take a stroll along the pier, relax on the beach, or explore the nearby Erskine Falls, a 30-metre waterfall nestled in the lush Otway Ranges.
Day 2: Lorne to Port Campbell
- Apollo Bay
As you leave Lorne, the road hugs the coastline, offering breathtaking ocean views. Stop at Apollo Bay, a picturesque fishing village halfway along the Great Ocean Road. Visit the Apollo Bay Fishermen’s Co-op for fresh seafood, or take a detour into the Otway Ranges for a treetop walk at the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures. - Lavers Hill
Continue inland through the heart of the Otway Ranges to Lavers Hill, the highest point on the Great Ocean Road. This small town offers a chance to experience the lush temperate rainforest of the Otways. Consider a short detour to Melba Gully State Park, known as the ‘Jewel of the Otways’ for its glow worms and ancient plant species. - Port Campbell
Your day ends at Port Campbell, the gateway to the famous Twelve Apostles. This small coastal town serves as an excellent base for exploring the limestone coast. Enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere of this charming fishing village.
Day 3: Port Campbell to Peterborough
- Port Campbell National Park
Start your final day early to witness the sunrise at the Twelve Apostles, a collection of limestone stacks rising majestically from the Southern Ocean. These iconic formations are the most famous attraction along the Great Ocean Road. After the Twelve Apostles, explore other remarkable rock formations in the area, including Loch Ard Gorge, the Arch, and London Bridge. - Allansford
As you near the end of your journey, make a stop at Allansford, home to the Allansford Cheese World. Learn about the region’s dairy heritage and sample some of Victoria’s finest cheeses. The historic Hopkins Falls, just a short drive away, offers a peaceful spot for a picnic. - Peterborough
Your Great Ocean Road adventure concludes in Peterborough, a small coastal town with big charm. Visit Bay of Islands Coastal Park, where you’ll find more spectacular coastal scenery, including the Grotto and the Bay of Islands. These lesser-known rock formations rival the beauty of the Twelve Apostles but often with fewer crowds.
As your journey along the Great Ocean Road comes to an end, take time to reflect on the diverse landscapes you’ve encountered. From world-class surf beaches and lush rainforests to dramatic limestone cliffs and charming coastal towns, this iconic route showcases the best of Victoria’s natural beauty.
Whether you’re a nature lover, adventure seeker, or simply in search of breathtaking scenery, the Great Ocean Road offers an unforgettable experience. This three-day itinerary provides a taste of the region’s highlights, but there’s always more to explore. Many travellers find themselves planning a return trip to delve deeper into the wonders of this remarkable coastal drive.
