Monalena Lagoon Rest Area offers travellers a serene pit stop along the iconic Stuart Highway in South Australia. Located approximately 105 kilometres north of Port Augusta.

The rest area’s centrepiece is the picturesque Monalena Lagoon, a natural water feature that attracts various bird species and native wildlife. During wet seasons, the lagoon fills with water, creating an oasis-like atmosphere in the arid landscape. Visitors may spot kangaroos, emus, and an array of waterbirds, making it an excellent spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers. However, this is a rare occurrence, so be ready to ooh and aah over the salt pan.

Facilities at Monalena Lagoon Rest Area are basic but adequate for short stays. Travellers will find shaded picnic tables, fire pits, and rubbish bins. There are no toilets or drinking water available, so visitors should come prepared with their own supplies.

The rest area offers ample space for overnight camping, accommodating caravans, campervans, and tents. It’s an ideal location for stargazing, with minimal light pollution allowing for spectacular views of the Southern sky at night.
