Narrung: An enduring community heritage
Narrung is a small settlement located on the western shore of Lake Alexandrina in South Australia. It is situated on the traditional lands of the Ngarrindjeri people, who have inhabited this region for thousands of years.
The Ngarrindjeri are an Aboriginal Australian people whose country includes the lower Murray River, western Fleurieu Peninsula, and Coorong areas. Their deep connection to the land and waters around Narrung is central to their culture and identity.
In recent decades, the Ngarrindjeri community has faced challenges related to environmental degradation, particularly concerning water management in the Murray-Darling Basin. They have been actively involved in efforts to protect and restore the ecological health of their traditional lands and waters.
The community continues to maintain their cultural practices and work towards greater recognition of their rights and connection to country. Narrung remains an important site for Ngarrindjeri people, blending traditional knowledge with contemporary life.
