The Narrows hike in Alligator Gorge
Exploring Mount Remarkable’s ancient canyon
Deep within Mount Remarkable National Park lies one of South Australia’s most captivating natural wonders – The Narrows hike in Alligator Gorge.
This remarkable gorge cuts through ancient quartzite cliffs, creating a dramatic walking track that draws nature enthusiasts from across the region. The ancient landscape presents an extraordinary display of geological forces at work over millions of years.
Location and getting to The Narrows
Alligator Gorge sits in the southern portion of the Flinders Ranges, approximately 45 kilometres from Port Augusta and about 13 kilometres from Wilmington.
The hiking trail winds through a section of Mount Remarkable National Park, offering a unique perspective of South Australia’s geological heritage. Access to The Narrows requires a short drive along unsealed roads, making the journey part of the adventure.
The geological story behind the gorge
The striking red rock formations of Alligator Gorge tell a story that spans millions of years.
Time and natural forces have carved this remarkable channel through ancient quartzite, creating walls that tower up to 50 metres high along The Narrows section of the gorge. The exposed rock faces reveal distinct layers of sediment, each representing different periods in Earth’s history.
Walking through The Narrows
The Narrows presents a bushwalking experience unlike any other in South Australia.
The walking track stretches for approximately 2 kilometres, with the most dramatic section being The Narrows itself – where the gorge walls close in to create a passage merely three metres wide in some spots. The trail surface varies from smooth rock platforms to loose stones, adding an element of adventure to the experience.
Massive rock formations line the hiking trail, their surfaces showcasing layers of rusty reds and deep oranges. Water-worn stones and interesting geological patterns make each step through Alligator Gorge a journey of discovery. During wet periods, small waterfalls might appear, cascading down the ancient rock faces.
Each season brings different characteristics to The Narrows. Winter rains create occasional streams and highlight the vibrant colours of the rock faces. Spring and autumn offer comfortable hiking conditions with moderate temperatures, while summer mornings provide dramatic lighting for photography enthusiasts.
Flora and fauna along the trail
The gorge creates its own microclimate, supporting various native plants that cling to life in the rocky environment.
Lucky hikers might spot native wildlife, including wallabies and various bird species that call this section of Mount Remarkable National Park home. The gorge’s sheltered environment provides habitat for several species of small reptiles and numerous native plant varieties adapted to the harsh conditions.
Note: In summer it is not uncommon the see snake when clambering over the rocks so watch where you are putting your feet.
Best time to visit
Spring presents ideal conditions for exploring The Narrows, when temperatures are mild and occasional wildflowers add splashes of colour to the rock formations.
However, Alligator Gorge offers different experiences throughout the year, from cool winter walks to early morning summer adventures. The changing light throughout the day creates different moods within the gorge, with early morning and late afternoon providing the most dramatic shadows and colours.

The gorge is amazing red jagged cliffs we walked down on the pebbled floor of the gorge. To get to the gorge there are many steep steps. It is an amazing sight with tall gum trees & birds. Go in the morning before it gets too warm.
Glad you liked it Connie. It is one of my favourites as well.
