Also known as Rosetta Head, this prominent headland offers spectacular panoramic views of Encounter Bay and the rugged Fleurieu Peninsula coastline.<\/p>\n

The formation of The Bluff tells a fascinating story spanning millions of years. This impressive granite structure emerged through volcanic activity, creating what geologists refer to as the Encounter Bay granite. The distinctive dome shape resulted from ancient glacial movement, followed by significant elevation during a mountain-building event approximately 500 million years ago.<\/p>\n

Indigenous Connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Ramindjeri people, traditional custodians of the area, named this magnificent formation Kongkengguwar. Their deep connection to The Bluff and surrounding waters spans countless generations, with the abundance of marine life supporting their community for thousands of years.<\/p>\n

Historical Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n

During the 1800s, The Bluff played a crucial role in South Australia’s maritime industry. A whaling station operated at the site from 1837 to the 1860s, utilising the elevated position as an ideal vantage point for spotting whales in Encounter Bay. The area later attracted miners, with the establishment of the Coolanine mine in 1863, where lead, silver, and oxide of tin were extracted.<\/p>\n

Natural Wonders<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Today, The Bluff continues to serve as a premier whale-watching location, with southern right whales frequently spotted between June and October. The 600-metre loop walk to the summit rewards people with breathtaking 360-degree views, encompassing Granite Island to the east and the spectacular southern coastline to the southwest.<\/p>\n
